The final three U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Men’s Boxing were clinched on Saturday night at the Last Chance Qualifier Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio. Due to the large number of participants in the light welterweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions, there road to gold was extended an extra day.
After a six long days of boxing, the champions were crowned in the loaded weight divisions. An exciting light welterweight final round bout opened the evening action as 2009 National Champion Duran Caferro (Helena, Mont.) faced off with Ohio’s own Robert Easter, Jr. (Toledo, Ohio). The two boxers had the crowd in their feet in an action packed third round and Caferro took the title on a 33-24 decision.
Amir Imam (Albany, N.Y.) won the final welterweight berth in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials with six straight victories in Cincinnati. Imam claimed the welterweight title with a 27-15 decision over Patrick Day (Freeport, N.Y.) in the final round contest.
The final championship bout of the Last Chance Qualifier was contested in the middleweight division. Two-time National Champion Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wis.) faced Kenton Sippio-Cook (Round Rock, Texas) for the final U.S. Olympic Team Trials berth, and he won the last spot with a 39-21 victory.
Saturday’s trio joins the seven champions from Friday in advancing to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Men’s Boxing, July 31-August 6, in Mobile, Ala. The seven champions from Friday were: light flyweight Erros Correa (San Jose, Calif.), flyweight Shawn Simpson (Chicago, Ill.), bantamweight Isaac Torres (Mission, Texas), lightweight Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio), light heavyweight Shaborn Ryals (Washington DC), heavyweight Robert Jekabson (Chicago, Ill.), and super heavyweight Brett Rather (Las Vegas, Nev.).
